Momentum is a powerful force in training, in life, and in anything you want to grow. But here’s the thing—it’s hard to build, and even harder to rebuild once it’s lost. That’s why, once you have a little of it—whether it’s showing up consistently to train, eating better, being more disciplined in your routine, or even just carrying a better mindset through the day—you’ve got to do everything in your power to protect it. Momentum doesn’t always look like huge PRs or big visible milestones. Sometimes it’s subtle. Sometimes it’s just the decision to lace up your shoes and get moving when your mind tells you to stay home. Sometimes it’s a small win—an extra rep, a deeper breath under fatigue, or showing up when it’s the last thing you felt like doing. And once you catch even a little rhythm, you have to nurture it. Feed it. Guard it from distractions, negativity, and excuses—because when momentum is building, it’s not just about what you're doing right now, it’s about what you're setting up for yourself tomorrow.
As a coach, and more importantly as an athlete who’s lived through the highs and lows of motivation, I’ve learned that the drive to show up and keep pushing forward doesn’t come from a single source. It’s not just about internal grit or perfectly structured programming. Our motivation is deeply shaped by our surroundings. The people we train with. The community we’re part of. The energy we absorb and the voices we choose to listen to.
I’ve seen it firsthand—how much impact your circle can have on your consistency, your mindset, and even your performance. Whether you're chasing a fitness goal, building better habits, or simply trying to level up in life, your environment either lifts you up or holds you back. That’s why it's not just important—but essential—to surround yourself with people who push you forward. People who show up, work hard, and inspire action by the way they carry themselves—not just in workouts, but in life.
I’ve always believed in the idea of competing without comparison. Your journey is yours alone. The only real competition is the little voice in your head—the one that tells you to slow down, take it easy, or skip the hard stuff. That’s the voice you fight. That’s the opponent you face every single day. The people training next to you? They’re not your rivals. In some way or another, they’re part of your corner. They might not be cheering for you out loud, but their presence—especially when they’re pushing hard, chasing their goals, staying locked in—has an effect on you whether you realize it or not. That’s the kind of energy that fuels momentum. It’s like running with the wind at your back instead of into a headwind. You can feel it. When someone beside you doesn’t give up, something in you wants to keep going too.
Think of it like this: being surrounded by people who are dialed in is like being in a room full of lit candles. Even if your flame feels small, the collective heat keeps you warm and reminds you to keep burning. But if you spend too much time around people who constantly blow out their own flame—or worse, try to snuff out yours—it gets harder to keep that fire alive. Energy is contagious. Discipline is contagious. So is doubt. That’s why we don’t just train our bodies—we train our environments too. We protect our headspace by choosing the right circle. We build our routines and hold them close, not just when it’s easy, but when it’s messy, inconvenient, and tested by life.
And here’s something I’ll always stand by: momentum isn’t reserved for training days. It exists in the way you show up in every part of your life. It’s how you treat your recovery, your nutrition, your mindset on rest days, your interactions with others, and how you talk to yourself when no one’s around. You don’t turn discipline on and off—it’s something you carry with you. And that’s why keeping it going—even when it feels small—is so important. Small efforts compound. Small choices matter. And over time, they create a version of you that doesn’t need external motivation to move. You move because it’s who you are. You push because it’s what you do.
So if you’ve got some momentum right now—even if it feels fragile—keep going. Protect it like it’s gold. Feed it with people who believe in you and habits that support you. Remind yourself that the voice telling you to quit isn’t stronger than the one that brought you here.
